Introductory courses are short in duration (16 hours in total), targeted at complete beginners and provide a very basic, yet practical, introduction to the language.
Ideal for simple social interaction and travel, this practical course will give you the confidence to communicate in routine and high-frequency situations and, importantly, will also enhance your socio-cultural understanding and survival skills where the language is spoken.
This course can be taken as a stand-alone course or, for those who catch the study bug, to prepare for PCE’s higher level courses, such as the Intensive Summer courses and/or beginners Full Year program.

The Introduction to Japanese course will cover a selection of very basic but useful high-frequency phrases and vocabulary suitable for routine, daily interaction. Focus will be on developing speaking (with emphasis on correct pronunciation) and listening skills to assist in scenarios such as greetings, introductions, polite refusals, enquiries and sharing of personal information. The course will also briefly introduce formal and informal forms of communication (including honorifics).
The course will also provide information on culturally acceptable behaviour and etiquette in Japanese-speaking societies and highlight faux pas to be avoided.
Certificate of Completion
Upon successful completion of the course, and meeting attendance requirements, participants will receive a University of Adelaide, Centre for Professional and Continuing Education Certificate of Completion.
This is not an award course. However, there are some institutions that may recognise this course as a unit of study. Students should check with the institution concerned regarding recognition.
