This course is being held at the University of Adelaide’s Roseworthy Campus (located 12km northwest of Gawler). Introductory courses at Roseworthy Campus start in February and run weekly for 10 weeks in 1.5 hour sessions. A language spoken by over 1 billion people. Apart from China, Chinese (Mandarin) is widely spoken in North America and South East Asia. Suitable for complete beginners, these ‘taster' courses will provide a practical introduction to the Chinese language.
Ideal for travellers, as well as when communicating for business or pleasure, these practical courses will give you the confidence to interact in basic social situations and, importantly, will also enhance your socio-cultural understanding and survival skills for the countries in which your language is used.
This course can be taken as a stand- alone course or, for those who catch the study bug, to prepare for PCE’s higher level courses, such as the Intensive Summer courses and/or beginners Full Year program.
The course will cover:
- introductions, greetings, basic pronunciation rules
- cultural “do’s and don’ts”, general etiquette, body language
- numbers, directions, time
- seasons, weather, calendar
- useful everyday phrases; making yourself understood
- your well-being, socialising, asking for help
- getting about, making travel arrangements
- shopping, eating, entertainment
- money, banks, post office, hotels, tourist attractions
- beyond ‘Hello’- small talk, expressing feelings
