Advanced Chinese


A language spoken by over 1 billion people. Apart from China, Chinese (Mandarin) is widely spoken in North America and South East Asia.

This course is designed for students who have completed the Fourth Year Chinese (Mandarin) course at PCE or the equivalent elsewhere, including any in-country experience or 180-240 hours of tuition.

The pace of the course is non-intensive, highly interactive and focuses on furthering conversational skills highlighting nuances in delivery, observation and practice of sophisticated sentence construction, appropriate and proper use of colloquialisms and engaging in situational discussions. The course content will be designed around topics on contemporary Chinese culture.

Students are required to spend an equal amount of time on individual study between sessions. Teaching instruction and all conversation during lessons will be in Chinese (Mandarin).

By the end of this course students will be able to:


  • further develop advanced oral and aural skills

  • discuss and debate a range of contemporary issues from a variety of perspectives

  • understand and, to an extent, use different language forms, including the informal, formal and honorific

  • initiate discussion and express opinions on a range of topics

  • orally report on specialist areas of vocation or research

  • understand and use idioms and colloquialisms

  • read and write informal and formal correspondence

  • report upon and discuss to a limited extent topics relating to contemporary Chinese culture
