Special Entry & STAT


This course is a series of three 3 hour workshops specifically designed for people applying for special entry into tertiary institutions.


Participants will acquire strategies which will assist them with preparing for, and undertaking the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).


You will learn how to, and actually prepare a Personal Competency Statement for submission to SATAC, which can assist with your application for many courses open to special entry.


The course will involve a high degree of interaction and brainstorming amongst participants, as well as with the course presenter.


In this course students will:


  • Learn about the STAT (Special Tertiary Admission Test), and gain an understanding on how the STAT is a means of entry into tertiary institutions

  • Be assisted with preparation to complete the STAT to the best of their ability

  • Prepare a draft Personal Competency Statement, and be offered an insight into SATAC’s evaluation criteria

  • Receive tips and strategies for sitting the STAT test, and examinations in general

  • Obtain a broad understanding of SATAC’s admissions processes for both University and TAFE entry in South Australia

Important Note - Special Entry into South Australian Universities is only open to persons aged 18 and over.


Different conditions apply to South Australian TAFE Institutions, and interstate Universities. You are advised to check eligibility conditions for the institution(s) to which you are applying.


A representative from the University of Adelaide’s Prospective Students Office will be attending one of the sessions to answer participants’ queries, relating to study at the University.

Instructor(s): Brian LeCornu
Brian LeCornu has been a biology teacher for more than 30 years. He taught at Risdon Park High School, Norwood High School, and Charles Campbell Secondary School, and was on the Biology Subject Advisory Committee at SSABSA (now known as the SACE Board of SA) for more than 20 years. He has long-standing experience in external assessment. Prior to retiring from full-time employment, Brian was a Curriculum and Assessment Officer at the SACE Board of SA. His extensive knowledge of biology curriculum development, delivery, and assessment, plus his experience in co-authoring biology textbooks and study materials, makes Brian a much sought-after teacher. Brian holds an honours degree in science and a teaching qualification from Flinders University.
